'Mina' makes landfall in Isabela

MANILA, Philippines--Typhoon "Mina" (international codename: Mitag) slammed into Isabela province late Sunday evening and will cross extreme northern Luzon overnight until Monday, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

MANILA, Philippines -- With "MINA" threatening to turn into a supertyphoon, tens of thousands of people on Friday streamed into schoolhouses, barangay halls and church grounds in the Bicol region to avoid its wrath.
"This is an unprecedented move," Albay Gov. Joey Salceda said of the massive evacuation. "While before, evacuation was being done during and after the typhoon had struck, now we are doing it days before the typhoon reaches us."

A suspected car bomb exploded outside the entrance lobby of the Batasan complex in Quezon City last night, killing Basilan Rep. Wahab Akbar and a driver and wounding at least 12 others.

Initial reports said the blast occurred at 8:15 p.m. at the south wing entrance of the House of Representatives just as the lawmakers were leaving the building after the adjournment of the session.

Akbar, a former Abu Sayyaf member, died at the FEU hospital in Fairview. Police are looking into the possibility that he was the principal target.

The government may revoke its grant of pardon to former President Joseph Estrada if he makes good on his threat to resist “till death” the forfeiture of his assets, worth P545 million, by the Sandiganbayan.

Acting Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera gave the warning yesterday as she pointed out that the forfeiture of Estrada’s assets was a condition for his pardon.

“The matter is beyond the executive department already. What comes after that (pardon) is to be addressed by the Sandiganbayan,” Devanadera told reporters at Malacañang.
